12 Days of Merry: Snowflake Mobile

A while ago, I made a simple baby mobile for my nephew and I posted the tutorial as part of my Acute How-To column on Scoutie Girl.

Just a few weeks ago, my sister sent me an image of a similar mobile that she saw at Pottery Barn Kids, but done with snowflakes.   I loved it, immediately pinned it, and decided to make my own.

Supplies
-12 pieces of paper - any colors you like - I used blue, light blue, and white thin cardstock.
-scissors
-embroidery thread + needle
-embroidery hoop {can be found at any craft store for about $3}
-thicker string or yarn to to hang the finished mobile

Step One
Cut each piece of paper into 4 or 6 squares and make snowflakes.  I have not made snowflakes in years, so I was a little rusty at first - but it soon came back to me.  It is an easy and fun "in front on the TV" activity.

Take a square piece of paper and fold in half to make a triangle.  Fold the triangle in half again and then bring each side to the center.  Cut off the bottom edge so you have a small folded triangle.  Make several cuts in the triangle and open - each one will be different!

Step Two
Cut a long piece of embroidery thread and sew a line of snowflakes {I did five for each string}.  This step was a little time consuming {it took me a whole episode of Tori and Dean...so about an hour}.  I am sure you could use a sewing machine and it would take so much less time but I was afraid I would rip the snowflakes.  When I made the baby mobile with circle cutouts, I used my sewing machine but these snowflakes seemed a little fragile compared to the circles.

Anyways, you could also just glue the snowflakes to the string - whatever works!

Step Three
Tie each strand of snowflakes to the embroidery hoop and trim the extra string.

Step Four
Use two thick pieces of twine or yarn and tie them to the top of the hoop.  You will use these strings to hang the mobile.

I find that using one of these double hooks {just stick it to the ceiling with a removable 3M strip} works the best because you can balance the mobile so that it doesn't hang lopsided.

That's it!  Hang it anywhere in the house....I am sending mine to my niece.  I think she will love it in her room.
